Good Neighbour Scheme

Everybody needs Good Neighbours or so the song goes…….

Are you over 65 and live in Sheffield?
Perhaps you spend more time at home than you used to?
Would you enjoy a regular visit from one of our dedicated friendly visitors who would come to your home for a chat and a brew?

This could make all the difference but don’t just take our word for it…. One of the people who benefit is 91 year old Jean who says:

“The visiting has completely changed my life. I feel more confident and am sleeping much better….”

But the Good Neighbour Scheme is not just about friendly visiting. It’s about providing a lifeline to older people when they need it most, offering the kind of straightforward help a ‘good neighbour' might give.

For example, do you need a bit of furniture re-arranging? Maybe you need to sleep downstairs for a while; we could move your bed perhaps following a hospital stay.

Has there been an occasion when you needed help to shop for food?   Perhaps the pavements were icy and you were afraid of slipping. We can offer a ‘one-off’ emergency shop- you just pay for the groceries.

Like most of us do you find hospital appointments fill you with dread? Perhaps we could accompany you in a taxi and hold your hand if necessary!  We would need you to pay for the taxi but there would be no charge for the service.

Telephone support

If you don't fancy a regular visitor to your home, we can offer regular telephone support. A friendly chat with one of our wonderful volunteers. You can set a convenient time to talk about whatever you like and put the world to rights if you wish.

Penpal Scheme

Our pen pal scheme was set up in March 2020 as we went into lockdown during the Covid -19 Pandemic. The scheme invited members of the public to write a message of support to an isolated older person to put a smile on their face. These letters, cards and drawings have come from far and wide and we are delighted to say that we will continue the scheme long after Covid is a distant memory. If you would like to receive some Happy Post please contact the team.

How to make a referral

The Co-ordinators take referrals from a wide range of sources including district nurses, GPs, social work teams and various intermediate care teams. Referrals also come from relatives and potential service users. You can telephone the office on 0114 2505292 or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
